Rob Allanson 8.6

Nose: Soft and gentle, raspberry jam sweetness, oak vanilla and milk chocolate. Opens into cherry and almond slices. Grilled Swiss cheese and mustard mayo.

Palate: Gentle, but has dusty sweetness, flaked almond pastry with icing sugar. Buttered and lime grilled corn. Mushroom notes.

Finish: Short and gentle but leaves lovely nutty and spicy notes.

Comments: A decent drop and a bang on the money whiskey. Has everything going for it.

Sam Coyne 8.0

Nose: Vanilla, oatmeal and maple syrup. Sweet to spiced. Nothing too overpowering.

Palate: Much sweeter than expected. Toffee, red berries and faint wisps of espresso beans. Becomes oakier and a sprinkle of nutmeg comes to the fore. Fresh mint comes through at the end with coriander.

Finish: Toasted oak. Lingers a while. Welcoming and warming.

Comments: You’d bring this one home to meet the parents. Pretty safe, and plenty of charm.
