Rye Straight Whiskey
Peggy Noe Stevens – 8.9
Nose: Pecan and caramel, with hints of vanilla. Warm sage, rosemary and black pepper with some oak and florals.
Palate: Wonderfully layered with charming spices and wood character. Crisp and clean with a dense complexity that brings out sweetness.
Finish: Eases into the finish with dangling spice notes and layers of caramel.
Comment: Classy and finessed intensity. Curl up with a book and pour this not so shy rye.
Susan Reigler – 9.0
Nose: Rye spice with caraway. Some sweet new leather and vanilla are present, too.
Palate: Dark cherries and vanilla at the center, which includes some milk chocolate. They are all united with assertive rye spice.
Finish: Warmth lingers throughout the mouth and migrates to the chest for a spicy snuggle.
Comment: A lovely example of an American rye. Add an ice cube to moderate the heat (though it is smooth served neat) and to amplify the cherry fruit.
