Peggy Noe Stevens – 8.6
Nose: Earthy with black licorice and toasted wood. Nutty pecan and tobacco frame. Some toffee and praline.
Palate: Depth of sweet layers and warm stone fruit. Honeyed mix of white pepper and hint of brown sugar. Pleasant mouthfeel and rich texture, almost dark rum-like candy.
Finish: Controlled and mature finish, yet a bit short. Butterscotch peeks through at the end.
Comment: Approachable and charms with such an unusual mix of flavors.
Susan Reigler – 8.4
Nose: Brown sugar, vanilla and some warm cereal notes, a bit like the aroma of baking whole wheat bread.
Palate: Grassy herbs pair with vanilla, but not at all in the way found in rye whiskey. The grass plays around the side of the tongue with notes of liquorice.
Finish: Very smooth and clean with crisp, dry oak and no hint of bitterness.
Comment: A very interesting and drinkable whisky using this uncommon grain. Certainly recommended to try.
