Peggy Noe Stevens – 8.5

Nose: Expressive wood sugars and almost custard-like presence. Dried apricot and honey. Golden raisin and toasted pecans.

Palate: Warm currants and citrus with hints of mint and herbal facade. Attractive brown sugar and bready flavors that also nods to the grain. Slight cherry note.

Finish: Crisp heat on the finish that displays a controlled  spice note.

Comment: The layered complexity is attractive. The grains climb softly around that lovely touch of heat.

Susan Reigler – 8.3

Nose: Light cherries with vanilla cookies and some hints of caramel all appear first, followed by toasted wheat crackers.

Palate: Stoned wheat crackers with more vanilla. Fruit has changed to ripe apples and there’s a herbal note, plus cinnamon.

Finish: The cinnamon really comes to the fore here, while the grain and fruit tend to fade.

Comment: Well-balanced whiskey that’s very fine on its own and complex enough to stand up in a cocktail.
