Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash
Michter’s Distillery Company
Style: Sour Mash
Peggy Noe Stevens 8.4
Nose: Southern grits and grains galore. Balance of light brown sugar and cane syrup then fruit notes of plum and apricot.
Palate: Smoke hits after warm vanilla and soft clove. The second sip then ladles out the ginger to a refined finish
Finish: Spice continues to dance on the tongue with a rush of oak tannins that coat.
Comments: Highly mixable, but I would not waste a “mix” when you can have a splash by itself. The tingle of ginger is a show all its own.
Susan Reigler 8.2
Nose: Caramel forward, light pepper spice, sweet oak, roasted almonds, and apple.
Palate: Very spicy and the fruit, nuts and oak have been joined by lemon peel. Pepper is especially pronounced in the middle of the tongue.
Finish: Caramel returns and is quickly overtaken by light pepper and sweet oak, which stays for a long time.
Comments: More than a little complexity. A splash of water calms. The caramel and fruit compete with the pepper and oak.
