Online Tasting Phoebe Calver Tastings

Online Tasting: Widow Jane

Welcome to the distillery…

For the first in our new series of online tastings, it’s time to cracked open a bottle from Brooklyn’s Widow Jane Distillery.

Located in the heart of the Red Hook neighbourhood, this distillery has been creating artisanal small-batch whiskey since 2012, both sourcing straight Bourbon and rye casks, as well as distilling.

Fun fact: Widow Jane distils using the Baby Jane corn varietal that has been nurtured by, and is unique to, the distillery.

It’s time to see what our Editor thought about the Widow Jane 10-year-old Bourbon in her tasting note below.

Proof: 91
Style: Bourbon
State: NY
Price: $$

Tasting Note
Phoebe Calver – 8.4

Nose: Freshly whipped cream, sandwiched in between ginger crunch biscuits. A light hint of cherry starts to make an appearance, with an oak case surrounding.

Palate: The fresh creaminess of the nose remains, however, there’s a slowly emerging peppery spice that turns up the heat on the side of the tongue. Cutting through the heat is some delicate orange zest and the dark cherry fruit. Rounds out with a very dry and savoury cedar edge.

Finish: A medium-length finish, with gentle heat lingering thanks to that peppery spice.

Comment: Rich and flavorsome. Quite a savoury Bourbon, but with just enough of that creamy and punchy fruit to pique my interests throughout.
