About the Whiskey

The Elijah Craig whiskey portfolio is part of the Heaven Hill whiskey family and the distiller began releasing Elijah Craig Barrel Proof expressions in 2013. Each barrel proof expression varies in proof, so it is important to note the batch number on your bottle. This expression is 12-years-old with a mash bill of 78 per cent corn, 12 per cent malted barley, and 10 per cent rye.

Tasting Note

Nose: Warm caramel notes that have a hint of acetone about them. Charred oak and light dashes of vanilla, fresh orchard fruit with sweet green apple skin, a little peach, orange rind, pecan nuts and freshly baked white farmhouse loaf covered in honey.

Palate: Sweetness initially hits, with more of that juicy green apple, sweet sultanas, rich creaminess of vanilla custard. There’s some gentle sweet cinnamon spice, with a little nutmeg and more pecan nut, then more of the charred wood, peach in syrup and orange zest.

Finish: Gently warming with a tingle of cinnamon that leaves you with a delightful nutty aftertaste and a little vanilla cream dolloped on top.

Comment: This is exactly what I want from barrel strength – it’s gently warming, full bodied and packed full of complex flavour. I might have to pour myself another… and another.
