Nose: Candy corn on the first nose with vanilla, but need to let it open to dig into the aromas. Chopped walnuts with granola and pound cake.

Palate: Grain-forward with corn husk and wood sugar. A little smoke creeps in at the last sip.

Finish: Vibrant heat that continues bone-dry with a level of the corn base still present.

Comments: Needs a little more polish on the heat to tame it a bit.

Score

7.8

Nose: Caramel nose backed up by saddle leather and cigar. Dashes of cinnamon and also nutmeg.

Palate: Cinnamon and nutmeg brace the caramel. Apples, barely ripe pears, and cherries. Rich mouthfeel and a dangerously smooth sip at this proof.

Finish: Medium long, clean and dry. Only here does the high proof assert itself with intense and persistent warmth.

Comments: With a little water, the spicy rye character opens and the caramel intensifies.

Score

8.3
