Nose: Beautiful honeyed-granola aroma with accents of peach and pear. Honeysuckle, soft truffle, vanilla and white pepper.

Palate: Smooth and elegantly textured. Caramel glides and then surfaces with barrel oak and crisp pipe smoke. Currants, orange peel and bites of coconut.

Finish: Admirably balanced and silky finish that hits the interior of your lips with spice and some tannins.

Comments: Another star of the year, I believe.

Score

9.0

Nose: Stone fruit, light rye bread, caraway, and caramel. The fruit grows in the glass, and apricots are joined by cherries.

Palate: Like a bite of fruit-studded caramel candy bar. Significant cinnamon Red Hots follow. Add water and the fruit, caramel, and spice merge into a rich layer cake of a whiskey.

Finish: Almost, but not quite, smoky. The high proof nudges out many of the flavors, leaving heat at the end.

Comments: Do not be shy about adding water or an ice cube.

Score

8.7
